Back in the 80’s & 90’s, I used a version of this exercise and my clients loved it! Each parent/partner is given some statements to rank on their own. Then they get back together again and discuss their top 3-4 items. Clients often discover things they didn’t know but that are influencing their partner’s perspective. It gives them the opportunity to address hidden conflicts and affirm their shared values. As a birth worker, it communicates to you what they have collectively decided is most important.
There are three decision making areas that most influence outcomes: Birth Experience, Birth Attendant, and Support Team. Each topic area has 12-17 statements, covering the wide variety of values that people may have. The kit comes complete with all statements, sorting cards, and easy to figure out instructions – even for the “not so crafty” people. Everything is coded so if you drop it all on the floor, you can easily sort it out again. (We really did try to think of everything.)
